As the vibrant colours of summer fade into the crisp coolness of autumn, our routines, energy levels, and even our health can shift. The season brings shorter days, cooler temperatures, and the start of the cold and flu season, which can impact both our physical and mental health and wellness in the fall.

By paying attention to the unique challenges and opportunities of the season, both physically and mentally, we can boost our overall health and wellness. Here’s a guide to thriving this fall!

Part 1: Physical Health in the Fall

1. Cold and Flu Season

With the arrival of fall, we enter the prime season for colds and the flu. As we spend more time indoors and temperatures fluctuate, our immune systems can take a hit.

Tips to Boost Your Immune System:

  • Eat seasonal, nutrient-dense foods: Fall is abundant with immune-boosting produce like apples, squash, sweet potatoes, and pumpkins. These foods are rich in vitamins A and C, which are essential for supporting immune function.
  • Stay hydrated: Cooler weather often leads to drinking less water. Keep hydration in check, as it helps flush out toxins and supports overall health.
  • Get enough sleep: Sleep is critical for a well-functioning immune system. Aim for 7-9 hours a night to allow your body to recover and ward off illness.
  • Consider a vitamin D supplement: With fewer daylight hours, vitamin D levels may drop. Since it plays a role in immune health, supplementing with vitamin D can help compensate for reduced sun exposure.

2. Staying Active as Temperatures Drop

When the weather turns chilly, it’s tempting to hibernate indoors. However, regular physical activity is crucial for maintaining energy levels, keeping your metabolism active, and boosting mood. Exercise plays a big role in health and wellness in the fall.

Tips to Stay Active in the Fall:

  • Embrace outdoor workouts: The crisp autumn air is perfect for jogging, hiking, or biking. Take advantage of local trails or parks while enjoying the stunning fall scenery.
  • Layer up for comfort: Dressing in layers allows you to stay warm while exercising outdoors. Opt for moisture-wicking fabrics to keep sweat at bay and avoid feeling chilled.
  • Join a fall fitness challenge: Whether it’s signing up for a virtual 5K, joining a fitness class, or setting personal goals, a structured challenge can keep you motivated.
  • Move more indoors: If outdoor workouts aren’t appealing, try indoor alternatives like yoga, Pilates, or strength training. Even dancing around the living room with your kids counts!

3. Seasonal Eating for Fall Wellness

Autumn brings a bounty of hearty and warming foods that support physical health. Seasonal eating not only nourishes your body but also helps you stay in tune with the natural rhythm of the season.

Tips for Seasonal Eating:

  • Focus on warming foods: Soups, stews, and roasted vegetables are comforting and packed with nutrients. Incorporate plenty of fiber-rich foods like root vegetables, whole grains, and legumes to support digestion.
  • Incorporate immune-boosting spices: Spices like turmeric, cinnamon, and ginger not only add warmth to your dishes but also possess anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties.
  • Enjoy fall superfoods: Pumpkins, butternut squash, apples, and cranberries are all rich in antioxidants, which help protect your body from illness.

Part 2: Mental Health in the Fall

1. Coping with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

As the days grow shorter, some people experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression linked to reduced exposure to sunlight. The lack of natural light can lead to feelings of fatigue, sadness, and low motivation.

Tips to Support Mental Health in Fall:

  • Maximize sunlight exposure: Try to spend time outdoors during daylight hours, even if it’s just for a short walk. Open curtains and blinds to let as much light into your home as possible.
  • Consider light therapy: Light therapy lamps that mimic natural sunlight can be effective for treating SAD. Using a lightbox for 20-30 minutes each morning can help regulate mood and energy levels.
  • Prioritize physical activity: Exercise releases endorphins, which improve mood. Even moderate activities like walking or yoga can help combat the effects of SAD.

2. Managing Stress with Fall Routines

With school back in session and the holidays on the horizon, fall can bring increased stress levels for many people. Establishing healthy routines can help manage stress and create a sense of balance.

Tips for Stress Management:

  • Create a cozy evening routine: With longer evenings, fall is the perfect time to develop a calming evening routine. Think warm baths, herbal teas, and quiet time with a book.
  • Practice mindfulness: Whether it’s through meditation, journaling, or deep breathing exercises, incorporating mindfulness into your daily routine can help reduce stress and promote mental clarity.
  • Plan for self-care: Make sure you’re carving out time for yourself amid the busyness of fall. Even small acts like going for a walk, practicing gratitude, or spending time with loved ones can have a big impact on mental well-being.

3. Stay Connected as Social Routines Change

As summer social events slow down, fall can sometimes feel a bit isolating. Maintaining strong social connections is crucial for mental health, especially during the colder months.

Tips for Staying Socially Engaged:

  • Host small gatherings: Invite friends or family over for cozy indoor activities like board games, movie nights, or a potluck dinner. These low-key events are a great way to stay connected.
  • Join fall activities: Look for local events such as harvest festivals, farmers' markets, or community classes. These outings can lift your spirits and provide opportunities to meet new people.
  • Check-in with loved ones: Even a quick call or video chat can make a big difference in feeling connected, especially if you or someone you know is struggling with the seasonal change.

Fall offers an opportunity to embrace new routines that nurture both your physical and mental health and wellness in the fall. By staying active, eating nourishing seasonal foods, and being mindful of the changes in daylight and temperature, you can make the most of this vibrant season. Prioritize self-care and wellness to stay healthy, happy, and grounded as we transition into the colder months.

Just like the body, the brain benefits from regular exercise. As we age, keeping our minds sharp is crucial for maintaining memory, concentration, and overall cognitive function. Numerous studies have shown that certain activities can enhance brain health and reduce the risk of cognitive decline.

Below are 10 effective ways to give your brain a workout.

Why Exercising Your Brain is Important

Exercising the brain is essential for maintaining cognitive health, improving mental function, and overall well-being. Here are five key reasons why it's important:

  • Improves Memory Retention: Regular mental exercises help strengthen neural connections, which supports better memory retention and recall. Activities like learning new skills or solving puzzles stimulate the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for memory formation.
  • Enhances Focus and Concentration: Brain exercises improve your ability to focus on tasks and sustain attention over longer periods. Engaging in tasks that require problem-solving or deep thinking increases cognitive endurance and sharpens concentration.
  • Promotes Neuroplasticity: Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. Exercising the brain helps maintain and improve neuroplasticity, which is essential for learning, adaptation, and recovery from injuries like strokes.
  • Reduces Risk of Cognitive Decline: Mental stimulation through challenging activities helps protect against age-related cognitive decline and conditions like dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Studies have shown that engaging in lifelong learning and social interaction helps keep the brain resilient against these declines.
  • Boosts Mental Agility and Problem-Solving Skills: Regularly engaging in mentally stimulating activities encourages quicker thinking and sharper problem-solving abilities. This is beneficial in both everyday situations and complex challenges, making it easier to adapt to new experiences.

By incorporating brain exercises into your routine, you can enjoy better cognitive function, enhanced memory, and a more agile mind well as we age.

Top 10 Ways to Exercise Your Brain

1. Learn a New Skill: Learning something new—like a language, instrument, or hobby—activates different parts of your brain. This stimulation strengthens connections and can improve memory and cognitive flexibility. A study published in Psychological Science found that learning complex skills in older adults enhanced memory function.

2. Play Brain Games and Do Puzzles: Engaging in activities such as crossword puzzles, Sudoku, or memory games challenges the brain to think critically and solve problems. These activities improve short-term memory and cognitive processing speed. According to research, regular engagement in brain games can delay the onset of dementia.

3. Practice Mindfulness Meditation: Mindfulness and meditation techniques are proven to increase concentration, memory, and emotional regulation. Research in Harvard Health suggests that mindfulness meditation increases gray matter in the brain’s hippocampus, an area linked to memory. Daily mindfulness practice can enhance mental clarity and reduce stress.

4. Read Regularly: Reading books, articles, or research papers stimulates brain activity by engaging multiple cognitive processes, such as comprehension and critical thinking. Studies show that reading regularly can slow down cognitive decline and improve verbal memory and empathy.

5. Get Plenty of Physical Exercise: Physical exercise, particularly aerobic activity, has been shown to boost brain health by increasing blood flow to the brain and encouraging the growth of new brain cells. According to the Mayo Clinic, regular exercise can improve memory and learning while reducing the risk of Alzheimer's disease.

6. Use Your Non-Dominant Hand: Switching tasks to your non-dominant hand (e.g., brushing your teeth or writing) forces your brain to adapt and can help improve motor skills and brain flexibility. Research suggest this type of mental challenge stimulates new neural pathways, promoting better brain health.

7. Socialize Regularly: Social interaction can help ward off cognitive decline. Socializing requires focus, memory recall, and the ability to engage in complex conversation, all of which keep the brain active. Research has found that maintaining social connections reduces the risk of dementia.

8. Challenge Yourself with Math: Solving math problems, either mentally or on paper, encourages logical thinking and enhances concentration. Studies show that, whether you’re doing simple addition or tackling more complex calculations, math exercises help keep your brain sharp.

9. Eat Brain-Boosting Foods: Certain foods are linked to better cognitive function. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish, and antioxidants, found in berries, promote brain health by reducing inflammation and protecting against cognitive decline. Studies show that people who follow a Mediterranean diet rich in brain-healthy foods have better memory and lower dementia risks.

10. Get Enough Sleep: Sleep is critical for memory consolidation and cognitive function. During sleep, the brain processes and stores information gathered throughout the day. Research in the Journal of Neuroscience suggests that adequate sleep improves problem-solving skills, attention, and memory.

Exercising your brain is just as important as keeping your body in shape. By regularly engaging in activities that challenge your mind, you can improve memory, enhance focus, and potentially prevent cognitive decline. Incorporating just a few of these tips into your daily routine can make a significant difference in your brain health, leading to better mental performance and long-term wellness.

In a world where buzzwords like "superfoods" are thrown around with abandon, it's easy to get swept up in the hype. But what exactly are superfoods, and what makes them worthy of such a lofty title?

Join us on a journey to unravel the mysteries of these nutritional powerhouses and discover the top superfoods that can supercharge your health and vitality.

What Are Superfoods?

At their core, superfoods are nutrient-rich foods that are particularly beneficial for health and well-being. They are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other essential nutrients that support optimal functioning of the body and may even help prevent chronic diseases. What sets superfoods apart from ordinary foods is their extraordinary concentration of beneficial compounds, earning them the "super" moniker.

The Top Superfoods

  1. Blueberries: These tiny but mighty berries are bursting with antioxidants, particularly flavonoids, which have been linked to improved brain function, reduced risk of heart disease, and enhanced immune function. Blueberries are also rich in fiber and vitamin C, making them a delicious and nutritious addition to your diet.

  2. Salmon: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, salmon is renowned for its heart-healthy benefits. Omega-3s are essential fats that support brain function, reduce inflammation, and lower the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and arthritis. Choose wild-caught salmon for the highest levels of omega-3s and opt for grilled or baked preparations for a healthy meal.

  3. Kale: Hailed as one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet, kale is a nutritional powerhouse packed with vitamins A, C, and K, as well as folate, calcium, and potassium. It's also loaded with antioxidants and fiber, making it a versatile and delicious addition to salads, smoothies, soups, and stir-fries.

  4. Quinoa: Often referred to as a "super grain," quinoa is actually a seed that's packed with protein, fiber, and essential nutrients. It's a complete protein, meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids, making it an excellent plant-based protein source for vegetarians and vegans. Quinoa is also gluten-free and incredibly versatile, making it a staple in many healthy diets.

  5. Avocado: Creamy, delicious, and incredibly nutritious, avocados are loaded with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. They're also rich in antioxidants, particularly carotenoids like lutein and zeaxanthin, which promote eye health and reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration. Enjoy avocados sliced on toast, mashed into guacamole, or blended into smoothies for a creamy boost of nutrition.

  6. Chia Seeds: Despite their small size, chia seeds pack a nutritional punch. They're loaded with fiber, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and various vitamins and minerals. Chia seeds are also highly absorbent, forming a gel-like consistency when mixed with liquid, which can help promote hydration and aid digestion. Sprinkle chia seeds over yogurt, oatmeal, or salads, or use them to make chia pudding for a delicious and nutritious treat.

  7. Turmeric: This golden spice has been used for centuries in traditional medicine for its powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has been linked to reduced inflammation, improved brain function, and lower risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's. Add turmeric to curries, soups, smoothies, or golden milk for a flavorful and health-boosting kick.

  8. Greek Yogurt: Creamy, tangy, and packed with protein, Greek yogurt is a nutritional powerhouse that's rich in calcium, probiotics, and essential vitamins and minerals. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that support gut health and immune function, while calcium is essential for strong bones and teeth. Choose plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt and add your own toppings like fruit, nuts, and honey for a delicious and nutritious snack or breakfast option.

Superfoods may not possess supernatural powers, but their exceptional nutritional profiles certainly make them worthy of the title. Incorporating these nutrient-rich foods into your diet can help support overall health and well-being, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, and boost vitality and longevity. So go ahead, embrace the power of the top superfoods and let them fuel your journey to optimal health and vitality!

We’re still knee-deep in cold and flu season, and that means sniffling, sneezing, coughing and a whole lot of sleeping (if you’re lucky).  When you’re feeling run down, there are a ton of ways to get relief using some of the things you probably already have in the kitchen.

Here are our top 5 cold and flu remedies using food that’s in the fridge or cupboard:

  1. Honey. Honey’s anti-inflammatory properties make it the perfect remedy for your sore throat. It can also help ease an upset stomach and chest congestion.

The taste doesn’t hurt either – especially compared to a few of the other things on this list. Just mix a few teaspoons of honey into your tea or take spoonfuls directly from the jar.

  2. Garlic. Garlic’s a powerful antioxidant, and its antiviral and antimicrobial properties can really kick a cold in the butt. It has a powerful compound, allicin, that’s released when it’s crushed or chewed. Allicin has been shown to boost the immune system and fight cold and flu germs.

And since you’re probably not planning on getting too close to another person while you’re fighting a nasty cold and flu bug, you don’t need to worry about the effect it has on your breath.

Don’t feel like just eating a clove of raw garlic? Make a garlic tea.

  • Bring 3 cups of water and 3 cloves of crushed garlic to a boil
  • Turn off the heat and add 1/2 cup of honey and 1/2 cup of fresh lemon juice
  • Strain and drink
  1. Salt Water. Gargling with salt water can ease a sore, scratchy throat by helping to pull out that flemmy liquid from inflamed throat tissues, making them less irritated and painful.

Mix half of a teaspoon of salt in a cup of water and gargle three times a day.

  2. Citrus Fruit. Both oranges and lemons are packed full of vitamin C, while oranges’ antioxidant properties will help the body heal and lemons’ microbial properties can help fight those cold germs. Squeeze some into your water or tea and drink up. And remember, fresh is best so skip the bottled lemon juice if you can.

  3. Ginger. Ginger’s a warming spice and it’s well known for its power against the common cold and the nausea that often accompanies the flu (think about all that gingerale you were given as a kid to soothe an upset tummy). It’s also a powerful anti-inflammatory to help ease your symptoms.

Ginger tea is easy to make and is spicy and delicious.

  • Bring 3 cups of water to a boil
  • Add some fresh chopped garlic and let steep for 5 minutes.
  • Strain and add a tablespoon of honey

So, next time your throat starts to feel sore or your nose starts running, head to the pantry and whip up some soothing ginger tea or get gargling! Your body will thank you.

As we approach the end of 2023, most of us look forward to a fresh new year. This usually means New Year’s resolutions and setting some goals for things we’d like to accomplish over the next few months. Getting in shape, saving money and getting more organized are always top of the list.

This week we’re looking at the top New Year’s resolutions for 2024. Have you made yours yet?

  1. Get in shape. Bathing suit season is only, what, 5 months away (if we’re lucky). New year, new you, right? While this is often the most popular resolution, it’s also one of the hardest. Make sure you’re doing it for yourself, set goals, and celebrate small victories! You’ve got this!

If you’re worried that this goal is pretty broad, we’d have to agree. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself. Instead, make it more realistic by narrowing it down. Perhaps that means committing to going to the gym twice a week, but even that seems much more achievable than “I’m going to get in shape.”

  2. Eat healthy. Let’s face it, December is the worst month for most of us when it comes to eating healthy. All the fancy dinners and yummy treats can really throw a wrench in our plans to eat well. If you pick January to get started on a plan for eating well, try meal planning to stay on track and don’t sacrifice too much or you’ll never last!

Again, if seems a bit broad to you, narrow it down. Instead of an all-encompassing “I’m going to eat healthy” – which, really, could turn into “I’m going to eat salad for every meal” (and who is going to be able to do that long-term?), make it more specific. Add more fruits and veggies and not as much fast food instead of completely changing your eating habits.

  3. Save money. If your goal for 2024 is to get financially fit, we applaud you. We all know how tough this can be, but it’s a really good goal for everyone to have. But starting out strong only to find that you can’t afford that extra $200 savings each month may not be sustainable.

Again, baby steps people! Start out with a budget so you know where you can save. Try smaller, simpler tricks rather than huge ones. Put away a small (even $5 or $10) from each paycheck. Save your loose change in a piggybank. Use only cash. However you plan to save, every little bit helps. You can do it.

  4. Get organized. Whether you mean at home, at work, or life in general, this is a popular New Year’s resolution for a reason. When we’re organized we always seem to be able to accomplish way more, but honestly, when life gets busy, that organization can fly right out the window. Even something as simple as investing in a good agenda or day planner can make this goal a reality – as long as you stick to it!

Keep in mind that by February, most of us have tossed those resolutions to the wayside. Sure it’s easy to make those plans on December 31st, but often they’re not as easy as we think.  If you’re geared up to make and keep a New Year’s resolution this year, maybe try something easy, like flossing daily or drinking more water, or instead of a yearly goal, set a new one each month. This will make it easier to keep and reward yourself for sticking with it!

Make 2023 your year. Whatever your goals for the year ahead, we wish you all the best!

The back-to-school season can be a costly time of year. The costs associated with sending kids back to the classroom can quickly add up, meaning more stress for parents.

This month, we want to help reduce some of that stress with some back-to-school-saving tips. And this week we're focussing on school supplies.

It can be easy to go to Walmart or Staples and fill your cart, but if you want to bring the total bill down, there are several things that you can do.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAVING TIPS: SUPPLIES

1. Make a List

Always start with a list, whether it's your own or one sent to you by the school. This way you can focus on getting only what your child needs, and not a bunch of other stuff that won't get used to.

2. See What You Already Have at Home

Things like pencil crayons, pens, binders, or markers don't expire. And chances are, if your child was in school last year, many of these supplies are hanging around your home.

3. Pick a Few to Buy New

If you have almost everything at home, perhaps let your child pick 1-2 things to get new. Maybe it's a new pencil case. Perhaps it's a new binder. Set boundaries before you shop so you don't get sucked in.

4. Share the Costs

Of the things needed, see if friends or family want to buy in bulk and split the cost. This can sometimes save a ton of money!

5. Buy Used

This is particularly good for electronics or larger items. Check Kijiji or Facebook Marketplace for people in your area selling items your child needs for the year ahead. Just make sure to practice buying online and don't get scammed!

6. Shop Around

This time of year there are a ton of different sales for back to school. Before committing to one specific store, check online to see the deals to try and save wherever you can.

7. Try Dollar Store

We know lots of stuff at the dollar store isn't actually a dollar anymore, but there are still some good buys to be had in the aisles.

8. Borrow or Trade

Some kids won't need some of the supplies they still have from last year, so talk to friends and family to see if there's anything you can trade or borrow for the year.

Back-to-school shopping doesn’t have to be a drain on your bank account. By thinking ahead, you might be surprised at just how much you can save! Use these back-to-school saving tips to save big on all sorts of school supplies.
