The back-to-school season can be a costly time of year. The costs associated with sending kids back to the classroom can quickly add up, meaning more stress for parents.
This month, we want to help reduce some of that stress with some back-to-school-saving tips. And this week we're focussing on school supplies.
It can be easy to go to Walmart or Staples and fill your cart, but if you want to bring the total bill down, there are several things that you can do.
BACK TO SCHOOL SAVING TIPS: SUPPLIES
1. Make a List
Always start with a list, whether it's your own or one sent to you by the school. This way you can focus on getting only what your child needs, and not a bunch of other stuff that won't get used to.
2. See What You Already Have at Home
Things like pencil crayons, pens, binders, or markers don't expire. And chances are, if your child was in school last year, many of these supplies are hanging around your home.
3. Pick a Few to Buy New
If you have almost everything at home, perhaps let your child pick 1-2 things to get new. Maybe it's a new pencil case. Perhaps it's a new binder. Set boundaries before you shop so you don't get sucked in.
4. Share the Costs
Of the things needed, see if friends or family want to buy in bulk and split the cost. This can sometimes save a ton of money!
5. Buy Used
This is particularly good for electronics or larger items. Check Kijiji or Facebook Marketplace for people in your area selling items your child needs for the year ahead. Just make sure to practice buying online and don't get scammed!
6. Shop Around
This time of year there are a ton of different sales for back to school. Before committing to one specific store, check online to see the deals to try and save wherever you can.
7. Try Dollar Store
We know lots of stuff at the dollar store isn't actually a dollar anymore, but there are still some good buys to be had in the aisles.
8. Borrow or Trade
Some kids won't need some of the supplies they still have from last year, so talk to friends and family to see if there's anything you can trade or borrow for the year.
Back-to-school shopping doesn’t have to be a drain on your bank account. By thinking ahead, you might be surprised at just how much you can save! Use these back-to-school saving tips to save big on all sorts of school supplies.
