To make it easier, we've decided to break it down into chunks of time. This week, we're looking at what you need to do in the weeks before you move. Then, next time we'll talk about the days before.<\/p>\n
Here are the moving tips you need for the weeks before you move.<\/p>\n

- If you're using a moving company, get quotes and read reviews. Book well in advance.<\/li>\n
- Schedule days off if you'll need them.<\/li>\n
- Ask your current landlord what their process is for moving-out\/giving keys back.<\/li>\n
- Decide what additional furniture you'll have to buy, and if there's something you'll want for move in day, set that up. <\/li>\n
- Start asking friends and family members to save any boxes for you. Moving boxes aren't cheap, so it pays to put those feelers out ahead of time.<\/li>\n
- Start the decluttering process. Every day, or every few days, pick a part of your house and go through it. Toss what can't be sold or donated. You don't want to leave this to the last minute or have to pay to move stuff you don't actually need. <\/li>\n
- Do a drive around\/walk around of your new neighbourhood. <\/li>\n
- Learn the transit schedule if you're a user of public transit. <\/li>\n
- Head to the post office and make sure that you figure out how to switch your mailing address. Set up mail forwarding and send out new address cards to people who may send you mail. <\/li>\n
- Call to find out how much advance notice your internet\/cable\/etc. providers need for set up appointments. <\/li>\n
- Meal plan around what you have in your fridge, pantry, and freezer so you can use it all up before you move.<\/li>\n
- Start thinking about a plan for your pet if you have one (it's always easier to keep pets out of the chaos on moving day). The same could be said for young children as well!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
These are just a few of the things to start thinking about in advance of a move. The more you get done in the weeks leading up the big day, the less stressful that day will be.
